As part of my online Abstract Collage Course with Karen Stamper I've been making highly textured backgrounds with wallpaper, corrugated card, old letters, maps, newspapers and rubbings as in the first photo. I think this brought out my 'inner child' as I have always loved gluing and sticking! I pressed little Indian woodblocks in to modelling medium to create the really textured effects. It was completely 'stress free' making the background as it wasn't about getting it 'right' or 'wrong' or about a final composition. It was all about what effects I could create. Even more fun when I got to spray water all over it and the acrylic ink ran everywhere! I then decided pure abstraction wasn't my thing so I added a bunch of flowers! If you look carefully you can still see letters, wallpaper and corrugated card!
